Last fall many students received a letter from Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm explaining that the state of Michigan had eliminated the Michigan Promise Scholarship from its budget.
In November, the governor declared, “Promises should be kept, not broken. It’s time for the Michigan Senate to take action and keep the Michigan Promise.”
The governor encouraged students and parents to write their representatives about this issue. But now, months later, the scholarship has not been reinstated.
In a letter dated Dec. 10, 2009, Russell Bloem, Vice President for Enrollment Management, expressed his concern to the Calvin community: “We are deeply disappointed by the added financial strain created by our state government’s decisions, and we recognize the challenges it presents for your family.”
According to Deb Van Beek, associate director of financial aid programs, 990 Calvin students anticipated the award. The average award for Calvin students was $1240, which is no longer available.

At the end, the scoreboard read 61-50 in Hope’s favor, yet this score does not reflect the true intensity and excitement the second installment of the women’s Calvin-Hope rivalry possessed.
The loss dropped the number nine Knights to 18-3 on the season (10-2 in MIAA) while allowing the Dutch to fly high to a 19-1 overall record, 11-0 MIAA record and the number four ranking in the country.

On Wednesday night, college students from throughout Michigan marched outside the capitol in Lansing to protest Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s
final State of the State address.
The students were protesting the removal of the Michigan Promise Scholarship from the state budget last fall by Republican lawmakers and signed “under protest” by Granholm. The cuts have affected 96,000 students statewide and approximately 1,000 at Calvin.
