CVN woes continue with broken equipment, little support

Most viewers who saw “The Girlie Show” and “Calvin Pop Trivia” on the Calvin Video Network (CVN) last year didn’t pay much attention to the credits or care much about the editing work. Yet the student staff behind the scenes of CVN have been working almost on their own for the better part of a decade, receiving virtually no help from the CAS department, originally promised to be an advisor.
Last year, CVN received much-needed new computer equipment for its editing system. Since then, the system has broken, but HelpDesk work orders remain unanswered. The only help Calvin Video Productions could provide was to give CVN some second-hand equipment. Struggling with lack of space, faulty equipment, and no leadership, this year’s staff has grown weary of neglect.
“In the past 5 years they have not had serious faculty help at all,” said Rob Prince, who works in Calvin Video Productions as the video producer and CVN staff advisor. “No prof has ever had any involvement that I’ve seen.” Prince, who graduated from Calvin last May, worked at CVN his sophomore year at Calvin.
The CAS department tells a different story. Professor James Korf spent about 10 years as the faculty advisor for CVN, but had to step down. Then, according to CAS department chair Randy Bytwerk, about 10 years ago the department was asked to consider taking over the supervision of both CVN and WCAL, the on-campus radio station.
“At that time we only had about seven or eight professors,” said Bytwerk. “We couldn’t spare faculty time even if we wanted to.”
