Nod to the past: "Chimes" and Criticism

April 1919

Chimes is a student's paper. Its contents are therefore, produced by those who are in a formative period of life. The character of the paper must not be misunderstood.

When an article appears on its pages, it is born of the conviction of the author, who, however, in turn gladly welcomes any criticism that his article may arouse.

He his aware of the fact that his superiors may have a better view of the question which he discussed.

Chimes can render great service to the students and professors alike. To the former it gives opportunity for expressing thoughts and views which are revolving in his youthful mind. For the latter it is an avenue leading to the inner thought of the students.

Chimes does not pretend that it is always right. Its contributors are human. And humanum est errare. But it claims its right of free expression. It is entitled to unprejudicial criticism. We welcome criticism, but every article should be judged objectively. The motives of the author may not be judged. For they are not known unless he himself expresses them.

We are sure that our School will profit when Chimes gives free vent to current thought. I

f that thought be wrong, it can be dealt with in the proper manner and its woeful consequences can probably checked by constructive and healthy criticism before it is too late.
