Calvin's attempt to help international students adjust to their new surroundings goes beyond orientation upon arrival. On Nov. 2 the International Student Organization (ISO) held a follow up orientation meeting for the freshmen who joined the group at the beginning of the school year.

Upon arriving on campus for their first semester, international students participate in four day orientation before the Passport and Quest programs begin. The International Student Advisor, Linda Bosch organized the event.

``[The follow up meeting] was something new,'' she said. ``Many issues, especially cultural differences and adjustments and academic requirements, the students aren't ready to address until they have actually struggled through these things. So it seemed wise to get the group together again and revisit the topics mentioned in the fall to see where students were at now; as well as to give them support and encouragement as they deal with all of these adjustments.''

Upperclass members of the organization were present to provide advice about academic life at Calvin. They recommended that students get to know their professors and use resources such as the Rhetoric Center and SAS tutors. They also suggested working on homework assignments well in advance and related various studying techniques.

The group also watched a movie, ``Cold Water,'' that addressed the culture shock resulting from the immersion into a culture quite different from their own.

Bosch reported that the turnout was somewhat low, but she hopes next year will be more successful. ``I've already asked for more budget money so that next fall we can do it during reading recess, go off-campus and have a nice meal. I would like to require students to come.''

Student Joo Eun Kim has found that the ISO has given her a sense of belonging.

``It's been hard, but that's expected of first semester of anyone's college career,'' Kim said. ``But the Calvin community has been very receptive and helpful.''
