Equality in MI sports headed for court
A season of change may be just around the corner for high school sports in Michigan. The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has made its final appeal to U.S. District Judge Richard Enslen to change the seasons in which girls play basketball and volleyball, as well as when boys and girls play golf and tennis. If the plan passes through Enslen and the Sixth Circuit Court in Cincinnati, it will be implemented into the 2004-2005 school year.

East Grand Rapids rejects New Age churchs permit
The East Grand Rapids City Commission turned down a pastor’s request last week to have his house converted to a meeting space for his New Age church. Rev. David Neven of the Coptic Church of North America had purchased a $450,000 home in East Grand Rapids, which he wished to be used as a church. According to the report, the city commissioners voted down the request for a special permit to allow the church to be based in a single family residential area.

MI's largest dance studio opens in GR
For most people, the phrase “contact sport” conjures images of spandex clad competitors taking the field. But Bobbi Jo Gamache said dance is a legitimate sport that most people in the Midwest haven’t experienced the full benefits of, yet. “Dance is really a health and fitness activity,” said Gamache, an amateur ballroom dancer and marketing director for Dance ‘N Sport. “It has definite psychological benefits like touch therapy.”

Feds make plan for national hydrogen car-fuel network
Further committing the United States to a hydrogen-based transportation system, Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham released a “roadmap” in Dearborn on Tuesday for putting fuel cells in the nation’s cars and trucks. Hydrogen power promises the double benefit of cutting U.S. dependence on oil from the volatile Middle East and reducing greenhouse gas emissions widely blamed for global warming. The Department of Energy and the nation’s leading car and oil companies began work one year ago on a “National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap,” Abraham said.

Border Patrol starts random traffic stops
Borrowing a tactic used in southwestern states for cracking down on illegal immigration, federal agents along the border with Canada are setting up unannounced, rotating checkpoints in areas known for smuggling. In Michigan, U.S. Border Patrol agents began stopping people Tuesday to ask their citizenship and other questions. Checkpoints are being used near Port Huron and Trento--areas that officials say are among the state’s busiest for smuggling. The main purpose is to catch illegal immigrants, said Loretta Lopez-Mossman, acting chief patrol agent for the border patrol’s Detroit sector.
