Seminars bring depth to Christian scholarship
As you’ve no doubt heard by now, Calvin College is an institution that prides itself on academic excellence and originality. Calvin has a well-earned reputation as a place of quality higher learning, and it does its best to maintain that reputation. However, one of the programs designed to further scholarship that is most visible to the wider academic community might not be too well-known among the student body: the Seminars in Christian Scholarship, which sponsors several seminars over the summer as well as lectures during the regular academic year.

Calvin talent at Arcadia
Any student who sculpts or paints naturally hopes to have a display in a public gallery. Calvin's art department does give students the chance to have their work displayed for audiences, with such forums as the Subterranean Art Show, the Spring Arts Festival and also more everyday venues like the walls of the Fish House. However, it’s a different can of paint altogether to be featured in a public gallery, where it will be viewed by many different people, and perhaps even bought by one of them. Senior Lee Bolt knows what this is like. An art major, he currently has several ceramic pieces on display at the Gallery Arcadia as part of its sixth annual holiday show.

Crisan's Coffee shop welcomes students
While most of us are pinching pennies trying to make our way through Calvin, it does feel good to splurge every once and a while. Crisan’s Coffee House in East Grand Rapids is just the place to relax, and imagine what life would be like if you weren’t earning minimum wage at Calvin. A nice quiet place, with fresh baked goods, food other than Johnny’s and strong coffee, Crisan’s is a classy place for a break away from our financially-deprived lives. Now most of us stereotype East Grand Rapids as rich and, on the whole, disapproving towards broke college students, but Crisan’s is trying to change that image.

Observatory looks to the heavens
With a special on PBS, the upcoming Leonid meteor showers and the promise of two new state-of-the-art telescopes, this semester has been an exciting one for the physics and astronomy department and the Calvin observatory. Of course, given that many students are not aware of or do not utilize the observatory, the increased visibility may very well do wonders to promote interest in what goes on above our heads. “There are, to my knowledge, no other Christian colleges that put so much effort into astronomy,” said Larry Molnar, professor of physics and astronomy.
