Administration considers chapel extension
Chapel time could be extended and daily class schedules rearranged if a proposal being considered by the academic deans and the faculty gains momentum. The Dean of the Chapel, together with the Provost’s office, is currently investigating a modification of the daily class schedule that would allot the full hour between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. for chapel and meeting times. Chimes first broke the story two years ago, when it was stated that the proposal had been “put on hold” pending the appointment of a new Dean of the Chapel. That position is now filled by John Witvliet, who has continued to push for the plan.

Daycare considered
Calvin College policy requires professors to send their children to Christian schools starting in kindergarten. The Planning and Priorities Committee (PPC) is currently discussing the idea of an agreement with Rainbow Child Development Centers, Inc. involving a college subsidy of the day care, allowing professors to send their children there at a discounted rate. Rainbow’s day care, however, is not a Christian institution. Some professors have voiced the opinion that this action would be inconsistent and illogical. The PPC, which includes President Gaylen Byker, various faculty members and board members and one student, is in the process of discussing the issue. Surveys were sent out to professors with children in order to determine the need for a day care.

Thirty-hour famine invites hunger
About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes, according to thehungersite.com. Statistics can mean little until people actually feel the hunger, and four RAs are hosting an event that will do just that. On Nov. 22-23, four Knollcrest East RAs will be hosting the “30 Hour Famine,” an event that invites the Calvin community to fast, worship and fellowship for the cause of contributing to World Vision, a Christian organization that works for well-being of people, especially children through emergency relief, education, health care economic development and promotion of justice.

Students promote non-violence
Lately, there have been many signs, posters and Student-News announcements about PAX. But, not many students know what PAX is: “That’s a movie…oh wait… that’s K-PAX, never mind.” “It’s a television station…” “...owned by the Mormons!” “What’s PAX at Calvin? Petitioners Against X-rays?” “PAX? That’s what guys have on their chests, isn’t it?” “It’s the pacifist group…duh, I’m friends with Case. Of course I know what it is!”

Faculty survey reveals varying stats
(First in a three part series)
Faculty at Calvin is 97 percent likely to be white and 73 percent likely to be male, according to a recent nationwide survey by the Higher Education Research Institute of UCLA. The Calvin faculty received more information from the UCLA survey on demographics, job satisfaction and institutional priorities during the Faculty Senate meeting of Monday, Nov. 4. This is the fifth time Calvin has participated in this survey. Two hundred forty-nine faculty members were contacted and 195 answered, making a 67 percent response rate. So while the majority of Calvin profs are white males, the percentage stated above may not be 100 percent accurate.

Women can preach
When Reverend Mary Hulst was in seminary, not everyone encouraged her to become a minister. At the church where she worked for ten weeks as a student, “some people would call the church on Friday night and ask if I was preaching, and if I was, they wouldn’t come,” she said. Today, many people come to hear Hulst preach at Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, where she is the pastor. Over a hundred people also heard her, four other pastors and one layperson speak at a panel discussion last Thursday night in the DeVos Communication Center, sponsored by the Calvin Students for Christian Feminism.

Senate Corner
As the year wears on, papers come and go, exams consume your life and then let you free, there is a tendency to lose track of just how little time we have in each stage of our lives. Personally, I often find myself wondering where all the time went. I set so many goals, but continually push them back to another week until no more weeks remain.
