Senate Corner

Can’t see nothin’ in front of me
Can’t see nothin’ coming up behind
I make my way through this darkness
I can’t feel nothin’ but this chain that binds me
Lost track of how far I’ve gone
How far I’ve gone, how high I’ve climbed
On my back's a sixty pound stone
On my shoulder a half mile of line

As the year wears on, papers come and go, exams consume your life and then let you free, there is a tendency to lose track of just how little time we have in each stage of our lives. Personally, I often find myself wondering where all the time went. I set so many goals, but continually push them back to another week until no more weeks remain.

With the end of the semester quickly approaching, it seems as though this is how a lot of people are feeling right now. We at Senate also feel this way from time to time. However, looking back over the past few months and into the next few weeks, it is obvious that a lot has been done and even more will soon be completed.

Currently, there are Senators actively seeking to set up Internet jacks throughout Johnny’s so that those students with laptops can hook up to the Internet. Likewise, another group of Senators is working on evaluating the smoking policy, which Senate does once a semester. As you may have noticed, people were handing out surveys in Johnny’s this week for this very purpose. So, if you have an opinion on this policy, please take the time to fill out one of these surveys. Your input is greatly appreciated. On a lighter note, yet another group of Senators is planning to restart the infamous midnight snack program in the dorms sometime next week. So, if you live in the dorms and enjoy free snacks, movies and euchre, keep your eyes peeled over the next few days for more information on this.

On a final note, we will be adding a little incentive to read the weekly Senate corner in Chimes. Starting this week, if you are able to recognize the title of the song at the beginning of the article for that week as well as the artist who performs it, you could win $5. So if you think you know the right answer, send an email with your answer as well as your name address and phone number to senatevp@calvin.edu by noon on the Saturday following that edition of Chimes. All correct responses will be placed into a hat and one name will be drawn from the correct responses of that week. Good luck to all!
