The Calvin community has recently lost several of its beloved members.
On January 22, Arthur Otten, Professor of French, emeritus, passed away. The funeral was held at the Metcalf Funeral Home, on Friday, January 25, at 1:00 p.m. We extend our sympathy to his wife, Thelma, and his family, and also to Professors emeriti Robert and Charlotte Otten.
On February 9, Kathryn Blok, professor of education, emerita, passed away. Although she had been in failing health for some time, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer recently. The family held a private funeral and visitation for family members only. Bette Bosma, professor of education emerita, the recipient of the faith and learning award on Saturday by the Alumni Association, paid tribute to Kathryn.
Kathryn was a beloved instructor of reading and language arts who influenced many of our present teachers near and far. She also wanted to begin the Young Authors Festival at Calvin College and ``recruited'' Bette to join her efforts. Kathryn has left a legacy of love, inspiration, and devoted service.
The Calvin community is encouraged to send messages of condolence to her sister, Trudy, with whom she lived: Miss Trudy Koster, 2473 Red Maple Drive S.E., Grand Rapids, MI 49512. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be sent to the Calvin College Education Dept. or to Potters House Christian School.
On February 10, John Vriend, who worked daily in Hekman Library as a volunteer, passed away a heart attack. He is survived by his wife, Jane; seven children, David (Lori), Carol (Jerry), Ruth (Bob), Miriam (Alan), Philip (Gerine), Paul (Micki) and Sharon (Bill); twelve grandchildren; four brothers and three sisters. It was John's wish to be cremated.
