Senate Corner
Life is full of questions. Some answers are simple. (What time am I planning to get up tomorrow? Where did I park my car? Do I really need to study right now?) Others are challenging. (What do I really want to do? Where am I going to live?) We all want the right answers. It's hard to think about these questions, but we must not forget that God will always be there. He will never give us more than we can handle and he will always be a light unto our paths. He wants to be there, right next to us, to help us make these tough decisions.
At Student Senate, we always pray to God and ask him to help us make the decisions we have to make. But, we also know that we can't base these decisions solely on our own knowledge. We want your input; at the beginning of the school year we set up a Student Senate discussion board. We are here to serve you, the students. Following are some responses/thoughts to questions seen there.
· Why do we go to class on Good Friday?
``Calvin wants students to go to the Tenabrae service on Good Friday as a community. But, the Provost is going to the next Student Senate meeting to talk about this. Hoow you would feel about switching the Monday you get off for Spring Break with Good Friday?''
· What is racism?
Racism is by far the biggest issue on the Knightvision Discussion Board. I wish I had all of the answers, but I don't. As I understand it, racism is having prejudices about certain groups. These prejudices affect the way we act towards others who are different from us. There is a huge debate going on right now: Some people think that not everyone is a racist and others say that every single person is a racist. We can all make an effort to restore those hurts that we have inside of us. If someone called you a racist and you were deeply hurt because of this, please make an effort to forgive him or her. Everyone sees it differently. We need to try to make peace and listen to each other. Even if a person may be ignorant about race relations please listen to them and try to teach them.''
· Are the flyers placed on parked the windshields of parked cars legal?
``They are not legal. Please turn in any of these flyers into the Student Life so they can track it down.''
If you have any more questions please e-mail us or post your concern on Knightvision. Let's keep the discussion going so that we can make Calvin College, a better place to live.
