Paris 1890: The Art of Modern Life

This exhibition which opens on February 14th at the Grand Rapids Art Museum will display the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Jules Cheret, Pierre Bonnard and James Tissot. This exhibit is organized by the Grand Rapids Art Museum in cooperation with the National Gallery of Canada and drawn from collections in Canada and the U.S., this exhibition includes seventy-five major paintings, posters and prints that forever elevate the world of Paris in 1890 at the beginning of the modern era. (The GRAM is open daily 11am-6pm, Fridays until 9:00pm, Closed Mondays. Admission is $5.00 adults, $2.00 seniors and students, $1.00 children.)



Dance
UICA Dance Showcase

This year’s showcase, presented by the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, highlights several styles of dance and includes a special performance by the UICA Dance Collaborative choreographed by founder and co-artistic director Angie Yetzke in collaboration with local performance poet Myron Hardy. ( The sixth annual event will be held in UICA’s Monroe Avenue Gallery, 41 Sheldon SE on Saturday, February 15 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 16 at 2p.m. Tickets are $12 or $8 for UICA members.)



Theatre
Singin’ in the Rain

This movie musical will become a theatrical event at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre on February 22 through March 24. This light-hearted Hollywood spoof features some of the best loved comedy routines, love ballads and dance sequences ever written- including the exuberantly soggy title number. Music
The Band of the Grenadier Guards

The Band with the pipes, drums, and dancers of Scot highlanders will perform in Grand Rapids at the Van Andel Arena on February 6 at 7:30p.m. It will be a British spectacular with the music of England, Scotland, Ireland, and the United States combined with precision marching, drumming and highland dancing. (Tickets are $13, $23 and $29 and are available at TicketMaster or the Van Andel Arena box office.)

G.R. Symphony: Movie Music of John Williams

Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Superman, Schindler’s List, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark- each one a blockbuster movie, a film that touched us and helped distinguish our place and time. This performance will give listeners the chance to experience the salute to Hollywood’s greatest living composer in John Williams.( Performances of this concert will be on February 7/8 at 8 p.m. and February 9 at 3 p.m. Tickets range between $15 and $52 and are available through Ticketmaster.)



Honorable Mention
U.S. Hot Rod Thunder Nationals

If you like to be among interesting people and are desperately bored on February 1 the Hot Rod Thunder Nationals may be just the thing for you. The baddest USHRA monster trucks are set to square off inside the Van Andel Arena. Each monster truck producing over 1,500 horsepower, each truck will devour anything in its way. (Tickets for the event ,which is to take place Jan. 31-Feb. 1, may be purchased through Ticketmaster and are $20 and $12.)
