Calvin backpedals on daycare plan Calvin’s Planning and Priorities Committee has come to a decision regarding the debate over whether or not Calvin should subsidize Rainbow Child Development Center, offering Rainbow’s services at a discounted rate to Calvin faculty. The committee has decided against an agreement with Rainbow for two reasons: Rainbow’s non-Christian atmosphere and its distance from campus.

Students lose hundreds in Michigan scholarships
The beginning of 2003 brought with it more than many students bargained for. In the past few weeks, over 1200 Calvin students have received letters stating their Michigan scholarships and/or grants are being cut by up to $350. Each year, the state of Michigan awards set amounts of money, through the Michigan Competitive Scholarship and the Michigan Tuition-Grant Program, to students who are attending private colleges and who are residents of Michigan. In past years, the peak amount was $2750. Students qualify for the money based on their GPAs, ACT test scores and financial need. In past years, the peak amount was $2750.

Some say money's okay
The Oak Room in the Prince Conference Center was the ideal setting for a panel on vocation and affluence on the evening of January 16. It was filled with over 100 students, as well as members of the community, for a discussion of John Schneider’s book The Good of Affluence: Seeking God in a Culture of Wealth. As Schneider, professor of religion, said, “No one can very well oppose affluence here.” The discussion stretched further than the building, however, into a dialogue on community, context, and capitalism.

They won't fight to win
On Monday, January 20, Jerry and Sis Levin spoke on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth. Their topic was on “Christian Peacekeeping the Middle East: Healing the Dysfunctional Family of Abraham.”“What’s happening to us doesn’t have to happen. There is another way, a better way…for those of us who are really serious about what Jesus taught …you must love each other the way that I have loved you,” Mrs. Levin said.
