| Senate Corner Love, lust and desperation are in the air today. Valentine’s Day aside, second semester is in full swing and we have been working to serve you. The book sale was another smash success with around $4,200 being donated to a charity. (We will notify you of the charity early next week.) Perhaps some of you saved hundreds of dollars or made hundreds of dollars; for that we are thankful. Since the book sale is such a large undertaking, we have not been able to vote on many new projects.
Despite the lack of large scale-projects, we have been doing some large-scale thinking. Being aware college students, we realize that Calvin is not the only community to which we belong. The current state of our world gives us great concern. Thus, we have been trying to be as informed as possible about the situation in Iraq. Part of Student Senate’s mission is to “…respond to the concerns of the student body members, ensure that action is taken for their benefit and promote interactive communication among all student-related groups at Calvin College.” We are committed to this mission and have been conversing with several student groups including PAX and the Social Justice Committee about their concern to promote peace.
There are obviously a variety of perspectives on this topic, which we would like to represent. Please look at KnightVision and participate in an on-line discussion about possible war with Iraq. Realizing that education is vital during this critical time, Student Senate will be working with students to organize a town hall meeting to discuss this situation from a variety of perspectives. Since Student Senate is simply a vehicle for communication, we will do our best to encourage dialogue.
If you have any suggestions for Student Senate about facilitating dialogue about the possible war with Iraq, or any other subject, please e-mail us at ssenate@calvin.edu or stop by our office. Blessings to you all and please take time to educate yourself about this global community!
