Interview: Dr. Ram Cnaan
Dr. Ram Cnaan is a professor of social work at the University of Pennsylvania and founder of that school’s Program for the Study of Organized Religion and Social Work. His research has included surveys of congregations both in West Philadelphia and throughout the United States and Canada. He spoke at Calvin on March 4 on “Public and Private Religion in America: How Religious Communities Maintain our Quality of Life.” Chimes staff writer Cathy Guiles interviewed Dr. Cnaan after his lecture.

Essay: Postmodernism and the emotional response to war
According to many, the postmodern era is said to have started at 3:32 p.m. on July 15, 1972, in St. Louis, Mo, when an apartment designed in the modernist “machine for living in” style was demolished, its inhabitants having declared it unlivable. In a cruel irony, others have also marked the end of postmodernism with the destruction of another building: the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, destroyed by airplanes hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. The relativistic mindset of postmodernism, many writers said, could not respond to the tragedy of Sept. 11 adequately.
