The fiddler on the pagoda
As part of the core fulfillments for a liberal arts education, Calvin College requires that its students take some foreign language. The most commonly taught languages, such as Spanish, French and German, are taught here, but there are also other interesting languages which a student can learn here. Among these more unfamiliar languages are Chinese and Japanese, programs which have been available at Calvin for close to twenty years.

Living in Washington, D.C. a capitol experience
A different environment requires a period of adjustment for a newcomer. Although this off-campus learning experience in Washington, D.C., only puts three states between the capitol and Calvin’s campus, our new “classroom” is an entirely different landscape. We have been fortunate to see some of what’s familiar. The continual snow that usually hinders our Michigan commute has fallen in record amounts here this winter. Expecting balmy weather, I left my boots at home. At least we trudged through it all with expertise, bypassing the locals.

The colors of Calvin revealed by Prism
The metaphor is blatantly obvious. Just as a prism captures light and displays a spectrum of colors, so Calvin’s yearbook seeks to “capture a year” and display a spectrum of students. While we are still young, before we find our minds in the unmaking and need to look at a Prism to remember our glory days at Calvin, let’s take a look at the Prism today.

Campuses voice different opinions about war
Calvin College is not the only campus abuzz with pro- or anti-war debate. Around the country, college and high school students are engaging in political issues more than they have in years. Debates about war in Iraq among Christian student bodies are heavy with a sense of moral urgency, and student newspapers are one of the most prominent forums for discussion. Westmont College’s Horizon recently published an article titled, “The world is marching, will the kingdom join?” The following week dialogue continued with a letter to the editor inquiring, “The United States is supporting freedom, will the world join?”
