Veenstra takes a final bow
Spielberg could not have written a more perfect tearjerker ending. John Woo couldn’t have imagined such an exciting finish. But as the clock struck zero, Calvin senior Jeremy Veenstra wished more than anything that he could rewrite the ending of the screenplay that was his four-year basketball career as a Knight. The setting was the Kresge Gymnasium, Calvin taking on its archrival Hope College in the second round of the MIAA tournament. How fitting.

Baseball team warms up to new season
Oh, the expectations. After a stellar and surprising 2002 season where the Calvin baseball team knocked previously undefeated Hope College off their pedestal in three straight games to win the MIAA championship, the young and inexperienced Knights of 2003 are feeling the pressure to repeat. If they plan on repeating, they will have to do so with a completely overhauled pitching staff. The only returning pitcher of the eight member staff of 2002 is sophomore Jim Deters.

Calvin hockey lands the three-spot
You might as well call it the West Michigan Invitational. After all, there’s nothing national about the top three finishing teams coming from Michigan, much less the same league. Dutch luck, perhaps. More importantly, it’s indicative of the competitive hockey talent residing in the area. Calvin is no exception. Finishing third at the ACHA Division III nationals for the 2nd time in as many trips, was Calvin Hockey, beating the University of Georgia in the consolation finals 6-3.

Tennis seasons starts off with an ace
Now and again as you wander by the tennis courts, it’s heartening to hear the sounds of spring approaching as the hearty thwack of a racket connecting with a ball graces your ears. Should you decide to stop and see what’s going on, you might see the men’s or women’s tennis teams honing their skills as they gear up for the spring season that officially kicks off over spring break. As welcome as the season’s first robin, the noises of tennis on a sunny march afternoon are both comforting and seemingly long overdue.
