Nod to the Past
Innovations set new dorm apart from rest
After six months of planning and four months of construction the new residence hall situated behind Boer-Bennink is starting to take shape. The $.3 million-dollar building scheduled to be completed in early August 1988 and will begin accommodating students in the 1988 fall semester in an effort to ease the current on-campus housing problem. According to Donald Boender, Dean of Men and a primary planner of the building along with Joy DeBoer, Dean of Women, and former Business Vice-President Henry DeWit, the overall design of the new dorm resembles that of the six other residence halls. However, the blueprints also include plans for certain unique features which were suggested by current dorm residents, resident assistants, and resident directors.

Historic campus landmark boasts glamorous past
The ivy no longer covers the walls and the gardens are no longer as grand. The bird-baths have been removed and the brick entrance torn down. Many of the trees have been cut down to make way for roads, but the Manor House retains much of its original splendor. The Manor House was built during the Depression by Grand Rapids industrialist John C. Miller, the founder and president of J. C. Miller Company (which manufactured and distributed metal plating and polishing supplies) as well as a mining business in Missouri. As a result of these and his numerous other business interests, Miller was able to amass a considerable fortune.
