Proposed new rules restricting lap dances and tips at strip clubs in Michigan are on hold.

In January, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission approved new rules for strip clubs that would prohibit strippers from getting closer than three feet from customers when they aren’t wearing a shirt.

The new rules also require strippers to be on a stage at least 18 inches high when performing.

Strippers only would be allowed to collect tips when they are wearing a shirt.

Ken Wozniak, manager of the executive services division at the Liquor Control Commission, said some state officials think the proposed rules are too restrictive.

The proposed changes are in a state of limbo, Wozniak told The Flint Journal for a story Tuesday.

“They’re not dead but they’re not proceeding,” Wozniak said.

The Liquor Control Commission intended the new rules to make the state statute more clear for strip club owners, Wozniak said.

Now, the law merely prohibits strippers from simulating a sexual act in a club.

The state has until December to act on the proposed regulations, which must also be reviewed by the state Legislature’s joint committee on administrative rules.

If state lawmakers request changes, the rules would go to the Secretary of State’s office for a final review.
