Single? [Haven’t been on a Calvin walk lately?]
Like you, many people are still searching for that special someone. Forget traditional dating services: the newest matchmaker to enter Grand Rapids is friendly, fun and fast.
It’s three-minute dating, offered to Grand Rapids singles by FastDater, Inc., a service that allows people to meet up to forty new potential soul mates in a single evening.
The idea originated in Chicago during May of 2001, in order to help busy singles meet other singles.
Although new to the Grand Rapids scene, singles are signing up quickly to fill the events.
Men and women are going on-line to www.fastdater.com to find the times and places of the events and to RSVP for the events, which is required in order to attend. Only forty to sixty men and women are able to sign up for each event.
The events are held at local businesses, usually a bar or a restaurant, which is closed to the public for the evening, so the FastDaters have the opportunity to meet with no outside distractions.
Once registered for FastDater, the eighty to hundred and twenty singles arrive at the event location and get ready to begin their evening of three minute dates.
The men and women take their seats in an organized manner with men on one side and women on the other. A timer is set for three-minutes and the singles sitting across from each other begin to converse.
Once time is up, the males or females rotate seats and talk to the next single for three-minutes.
At the end of each three-minute date the single checks “yes” or “no” as to whether there was a connection between them and the person they were talking to.
At the end of the event the singles turn in their compatibility sheets and go home to anxiously await the results.
FastDater uses the compatibility sheets to see who made a connection and both checked yes for each other.
After figuring out the results, FastDater e-mails the singles their compatible partners and leaves it up to the singles from there.
FastDater hosts events for ages twenty-two to thirty-nine, thirty to forty-eight, and forty to fifty, but is considering expanding the ages after they get a feel for Grand Rapids singles' demands.
There is also a fee of $35 at the door for each event, but if you think about it, that is less than a dollar a date.
FastDater is sweeping through the singles scene, and it seems like many people want to go and give the three minute date a try.
Kelly Hunt, a senior at Calvin, said, “I would like to try FastDater, because I’m always open to new experiences.”
If you feel that you may never find that special someone, then maybe you should give FastDater a try.
The FastDater website quotes many customers raving over FastDater’s service and events, claiming the March party “was a BLAST and it’s time for another BLOW OUT PARTY.”
If you’re interested in the next FastDater event, the next event will be on April 15th, for ages 22-36, at the Margarita Grill.
