Calvin Theatre Company presents:
'Emma'

Photos by Jeremy Andrus

This adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, and this production in particular, is very much a storytelling event. The publicity for this show has indicated that “Emma” is told through Jane Austen’s eyes. When audiences enter the theatre, they will immediately see the silhouette of Jane Austen on an elegant curtain. As the play opens, a spotlight first illuminates the musician (Becky Carpenter), who acts in the chorus as the voice of Jane Austen. Then a spot lights Emma (Tammy Goodrich) behind the silhouette, and she enters the playing space through split curtains.

"Not too thin. Bad for the bowels," Mr. Woodhouse (Michael Hutchins) explains porridge to Mr. Knightley (Brian Farish).

The dashing Frank Churchill (Neal DeRoo) arrives in town.

Emma gives Harriet very poor advice, indeed.

Beth Gunnink and Rebecca Carpenter pose beautifully as Emma's collection of portraits.

Emma, surrounded by the female members of the cast, broods poutingly over the trials and tribulations of love in the lives of those around her.

Life imitates art, in the case of Mr. Elton.

"Snow! Consternation!" The Westons' Christmas party is abruptly interupted by the oncoming winter.

Emma watches angrily as her matchmaking plans shatter.
