Senate Corner

cause I have a lot of things to say and you’d be wise to listen good

Another week of worshipping, working and warring has ended. Although our eyes have been riveted to TV screens and our prayers with leaders and soldiers, daily life here at Calvin continues. Needless to say Student Senate has continued to work as well.

Unlike our last resolution, a new resolution was passed without fanfare or petition. Jordan Hoogendam, a representative from the Environmental Stewardship Coalition, spoke to Senate about his proposal to encourage the Calvin management to pursue alternative means of energy such as sun and wind. Obviously there are many issues surrounding this proposal, which is why ESC is committed to pursuing education before action upon this matter. Student Senate unanimously passed a proposal to support ESC in advertising of their findings and options regarding renewable energy.

Along with passing this proposal, Senate has been busy evaluating the current constitution and voting upon a few amendments. One option is to amend the Constitution to allow for senators to serve a semester term for special situations including graduating mid-year and studying abroad for one semester. What do you think? Would this option misrepresent you as the student body?

Speaking of representation, it is time for elections. Executive team elections have shaped up and we have two teams running as this goes to print. Look for their campaign information to pop up around campus next week. Executive team elections will occur on KnightVision on Thursday, April 17, so please take the time to meet these candidates and cast an informed vote. Senatorial elections are creeping up as well. An informational meeting will take place Monday, April 7 at 5 p.m. in the Student Senate lounge. Please consider running for a Senate spot. Serving on Senate is an excellent way to better understand and contribute to this community.

Senate is also working on a letter-writing campaign to support our troops overseas. Watch next week’s Senate corner and our bulletin board for more information as we iron out those details.

As always, e-mail VP Vryhof at senatevp@calvin.edu to receive a cash prize for identifying the quoted song correctly.*
