Volleyball falls to Hope in a heartbreaker
Despite D-III record-breaking attendance, Knights are unable to topple Dutch from top of MIAA
Before the match, everything was pointing toward the second installment of the 2009 chapter of the Calvin-Hope rivalry being a clash of epic proportions. Hope had already defeated Calvin once this season. Hope held a one-game lead over Calvin in the MIAA standings. Hope was ranked fifth nationally, while Calvin was ranked 13th. The Calvin fans were looking to set a record for attendance, meaning that the atmosphere would be loud and electric.
Unfortunately for the Knights (20-6 overall, 12-2 MIAA), they came out on the wrong end of the match, losing to Hope (24-2 overall, 14-0 MIAA) before a record-setting crowd in a thrilling five-set match, 22-25, 25-22, 27-25, 12-25, and 6-15.
The pregame bash had the fans pumped up and ready to support their Calvin Knights. The Knights, too, appeared to be pumped, as they played with energy and passion that helped to propel them to an early lead in the first game.

Matched up against rival Hope College Wednesday afternoon, Calvin came out strong on Senior Day in what would be their last home match of the regular season, defeating the Flying Dutch 2-0 and securing their fifth straight MIAA title.
The seniors received a nice ovation before the game, highlighting their Calvin soccer careers and the various accolades that have been received.

The hockey team defeated visiting Dordt College in a convincing fashion in front of a boisterous family weekend crowd at the Jolly Roger Arena last Friday.
The 8-3 non-conference win improves Calvin’s record to 5-0 on the season, as well as earning the Knights the title of “CRC Ice Supremacy.” Not only did Calvin accomplish all this, but they also were able to raise a sizeable amount of money for breast cancer research.

The men’s soccer squad handled the wet, slippery conditions last Saturday and dealt Olivet a 2-0 defeat in another physical contest, keeping the Knights on top in the MIAA.
The Comets applied the pressure early, but the Knights held firm and avoided an early goal when sophomore Justin Ahearne deflected out a goal-bound shot 20 minutes into the game.
Last Saturday, Calvin hosted the MIAA Relays at the Venema Aquatic Center.
The Knights Swim and Dive Team came out with a strong performance, due in part to a strong supporting turnout, for their first conference home meet of the season.
After a weekend to rest up, Calvin’s cross country teams return to competition this weekend when they head to Adrian for the MIAA Championships.
Both teams seek to defend their conference titles, with the men’s team hoping to extend its streak of 22 straight championship victories. The women look to gain their fifth consecutive title, having won or shared victory in 20 of the last 21 conference meets.
With Hockey action having just begun, Sports beat writer Luke Leisman caught up with senior captain Justin Blaauwendraat and asked him a series of questions. No questions were off-limits. This is The Hot Seat.
