Secondhand: Coat of Many Colors
Shop vintage, thrift and antique

With deer busts surrounded by art, clothing and bikes on the walls, numerous racks of attire, display cases of antique treasures and rescued dogs playing on the floor, it is near impossible to find a more quirkily charming place than local antique-vintage shop, Coat of Many Colors.

In August of 2006, local Grand Rapids resident Matt Fowler decided to make business out of his greatest habit and passion: collecting.

“My mother said I’ve been collecting since I was 18 months old by hiding stones or flowers behind my bed,” said Fowler in his store.

So with a house full of used belongings and a desire to work independently, Fowler began buying and selling clothing and items as a means of enjoyment and income three and a half years ago. Before long, items and clothes filled every closet in his home as well as 12 hotel-sized laundry baskets.

Secondhand: Scavenger Hunt
Shop vintage, thrift and antique

After more than 20 years in business, Scavenger Hunt is still a vintage store hot spot which showcases a plethora of styles. With five “renters” peddling their wares at prices ranging from $5-$100, shoppers can always find something within their budget. Sarah Saunders, one of the store’s “renters”, said that, “it’s important to have a shop like this locally, instead of having everyone going to the mall.”

Located on Division Ave., the store is just down the street from Vertigo Music, the DAAC, The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, Goodwill and several galleries, including Calvin’s. With an edgier, more eclectic feel than most vintage stores, the small, often narrow space is filled with a wide array of clothes, accessories, shoes, and even a salon. Three of the current “renters” are stylists, who offer cuts, color, waxing and manicures, though they work by appointment only.
