I like comedy a lot. My favorite TV shows, movies, general life events and memories are the comical, ironic or absurdly hilarious ones. And I can’t get enough of laughter right now — I figure that with all this talk about H1N1, I need as much medicine as I can get, and they say that laughter is the best.
So, of course you can imagine how delighted I was to hear that the first production from the Calvin Theatre Company (CTC) would be “The No Frills Revue.” Now, I certainly didn’t know much about the revue when I first heard about it, but since then I’ve received a little press release, and I thought I’d share some of what I’ve found out with you all. From the same country that brought us the likes of Frou Frou and Eurythmics comes the new electro-synth duo, LaRoux. As with Eurythmics, LaRoux features a super-androgynous front woman in Elly Jackson. As is sometimes the case with Frou Frou, LaRoux also exudes the appearance of a one-woman show. In reality, however, Ben Langmaid works side by side with Jackson as the duo’s synth player, songwriter and co-producer.

When the great author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn passed away in the summer of 2008, he left behind a bibliography of powerful masterpieces that rank him among the pinnacles of the Russian canon. Best remembered for his epic, three-volume magnum opus, “The Gulag Archipelago,” and his equally compelling novella, “One Day in the Life of Ivan Desinovich,” Mr. Solzhenitsyn’s legacy no doubt draws its origins from the traumatic and probing experiences he endured in Joseph Stalin’s totalitarian regime. In my English class the other day, we talked about all the forms of technology that cater to the special, unique self: iPod, iTunes, My Computer, MeTV and more.
