Our Mission statement:
The Film Arts Committee seeks to deepen the Calvin
community's appreciation of world and independent cinema.
Film is a powerful and popular medium that portrays culture
in various ways. It is our determination to better decipher
and discern what movies tell us and how they reflect human
experience. As Christians, we are not to shy away from
culture, but should evaluate it-- with perceptive and
careful minds.
How do we accomplish our mission?
We work to accomplish our mission by screening films on
Calvin's campus. After a film screening, we hold a
discussion, sometimes with a guest lecturer. We also work
with other student organizations and departments to help
bring films together. Currently we are working on
developing some new programs, such as a short film
festival, lectures, and other ways of exploring film.

A Note on Film Selection:
The film selection process begins when films are previewed
before the Film Arts Committee. The FAC typically meets
once a week, and after previewing a film, discusses it. The
committee is asked to make comments on the film regarding
its artistic, technical, and philosophical merit*. A few
months before the season starts, the leadership of the
committee reviews the comments made on preview films, and
decides which films they might show. If a film has received
positive comments, and is both available, and within the
budget range, the film is selected and scheduled.
*A film is usually considered to be worhty of showing if it
offers an authentic view of the world, and offers glimpses
of God's goodness and humanity's deparavity. By examining
God's goodness, and man's deparavity, viewers can become
better equiped to interact with their faith.
